October 18, 2006

Okay - I took everyone's advice and have put my stories into a book ... remarkably, thinking I would have to submit this to a dozen or more publishing houses, and read a dozen or more rejection letters, imagine my absolute surprise when the very first publishing house I contacted sent me a letter very quickly.   (see the letter).  I actually received a phone call before I received the letter, so I had been revived from my shock induced coma prior to its arrival.

Once I got over the serious injuries caused to me by people patting me on the back (over and over and over) I began to put the stories together into a readable book.  I thought, "No sweat!".  Little did I know that there are about 2 and a half million things you have to do to a manuscript before it can be submitted for publication.

My first full submission came back and I began the 2.5 million changes.

Stay posted - as the editing and publication progresses, I will keep you posted on this website.  I expect every one of you to buy three or four copies to give your friends and neighbors.

GOOD GRIEF.  Now I know why more people don't publish books....this is a lot of work - BORING work.  Spelling, grammatical, editing double entendre, spell out the hidden meanings, add quotations for speech, describe the people you're talking to and about, yada yada yada ... I worked a solid month, did no barn work, didn't ride, didn't sleep, and submitted a manuscript.  Immediately rejected.  Although I thought I had done the2.5 million corrections, apparently I missed about a half million.

Read, read, read - type, type, type - read some more.

I was ready to submit a finalized manuscript (okay, I thought it was finalaized) - after reading, and rereading, and rereading again.  Making corrections, wondering why I ever wrote these stupid stories in the first place and who's going to read them now that I've edited all the curse words out (the publisher wants a "G-rated" book because they feel they can really market it to the young crowd)

I was encouraged to have people that are NOT into this sport read the manuscript and tell me what parts are confusing so I could edit them to add more information.  I did.  In fact, the person I had read the manuscript is a die-hard reader.  She chews through as many books a week as me and Marc combined (that's a whole lot of reading - explains why she doesn't have time to do this sport)

She red lined the manuscript so hard that when I got it back I thought it had been murdered and all the blood and guts of the stories had leaked out.  I was devestated by the amount of information that I needed to add in to keep the "non-endurance riding" reader interested.

TYPE TYPE TYPE

I hate these stories.

So, I finally get it where it's actually readable and resumbit it to the publishing company.  It took one whole day for them to come back with about 100 corrections for me to make.

Sigh.....

So, I'm now working on yet another rewrite.

January 13, 2007

I have decided that my stories aren't funny after all ... in fact, they're down right dull and boring, especially after reading them 40 times looking for even MORE errors.  I didn't go to school to learn how to write and it's obvious in all the corrections they send for me to do (sigh)  I think I'll just give up on it now and be done with it.

Today I spent four hours reformatting the manuscript, fixing some "punctuation" matters, deleting all the images and saving them as jpgs - labeling them picture 1, picture 2, etc and sending everything back tot he editor.

My, I think he just likes to talk to me on the email because he sure does send me a bunch of them.

Okay - that's all for tonight, I think I'm now brain dead.  And don't write to me and ask about the publishing status...it's not all it's cracked up to be, let me tell you.

March 8, 2007

My father is in the hospital dying and my publisher send me an email - my book is FINALLY in production.  He will be sending me a correction file at the end of the month.  I have 15 days to read it, make the changes and send it back.  WHOO HOO.  I was able to share this email with my father before he passed on.  I am so glad that he knew I would actually be infamous before he passed on.

April 04, 2007

I got the final edits, reviewed them, and was totally amazed by the amount of grammatical errors, and punctuation errors that they highlighted.  I couldn't do that job - too tedious for me.  I got through them, approved them and sent it back.  Now, he'll send me a final FINAL revision to sign off on, April 15.  (Gads, I hope this is over soon)  Then the art work for the cover starts.

May 20, 2007

The book is finished the editing stage.  I know because I had to sign off on it.  (WHOO WHOO).  The art department sent me several covers to review and make suggestions on.  I actually like one, it fits the book perfectly and fits me to a "T".  Simple yet says it all.  I'm not telling you about it until it's finished.

July 7, 2007

Cover is done (click here).  Book has finally made it over to production and they've started the layout.  They're estimating that the final production will be completed this month and the book will be available for sale in August 2007.  Everyone needs to run out and get a copy!

AUGUST 6 - WHOO HOO!

Today, I received a bound sales copy of my book.  I cried.  I can't believe it, I am really an author.  I sure do wish my dad had lived long enough to see this book.  This is a most remarkable thing to have happened in my life and I can't even start to thank all the people that have supported me all these years, encouraged me to write the stories down and put them into a book, and who haven't mocked me but once or twice in the past couple months that this has been taking to get accomplished.

WOW!

September 9 - It's real, it's really real!

Today I scheduled to fly out to Oklahoma City October 9-12 and do the reading for the Book on Tape.  My book will be available for sale as an audio book for the blind and for the illiterate.  Holy Crow.  I can't believe it, this is amazing.  The really neat part is that people will hear ME telling the stories.

OCTOBER 3 - I have them, I have them!  BOOKS.  Real books.  I did it, I became a published writer.  Who would have believed it could happen?

The hard copy can now be ordered on-line, and ships the week of October 15.
