What exactly is FOUNDATION?

"A foundation-bred Appaloosa is a horse who has an overwhelming majority of Appaloosa to Appaloosa bred ancestors, and whose pedigree goes back in nearly direct
descent to the F numbered horses in the ApHC stud books, following the pattern of breeding towards purebred status with standard livestock breeding techniques as practiced by the early  breeders of the registry."

Depending on which Foundation Appaloosa Group you belong to, the definition of FOUNDATION APPALOOSA will be different!  I will give you links out to several off-shoot registries trying to get the Foundation Appaloosa off the ground.

In the meantime, in my breeding program at New Promise Farms, if I tell you the foal or mare or stallion is Foundation Appaloosa, it means that the horse can trace it's lineage, through sire AND dam - not just one parent, back to the founding horses of the ApHC registry.  Those horses that are registered with an F#.

FAHR (Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry)

The Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry (FAHR) is dedicated to the protection, preservation, perpetuation and promotion of the true bloodlines of the Appaloosa horse (for more info, see Introduction to Appaloosas by Mary P. Hare).

CRHA (Colorado Ranger Horse Association)

The oldest of the western horse breed registries still in existence in the United States. To meet the requirements for registration with the CRHA, a horse must show a direct descent from at least one of the two foundation stallions 'Max #2' and 'Patches #1'. While many Colorado Rangerbreds have Appaloosa markings, CRHA is not a color registry.

ApHC FPD (Appaloosa Horse Club Foundation Pedigree Designation)

Increasing the blooded percentage of Appaloosa to Appaloosa breeding.  Now offering National Pointed classes for FPD registered Appaloosas with a minimum 73% FPD.  Program changed for 2004...any horses registered prior to 2004 are grandfathered into the program, but all horses from 2004 on must meet new criteria for registration.  Visit their website for more information on this promising program to preserve Appaloosa breeding.

ICAA (International Colored Appaloosa Association

LogoCurrently the only registry that is successfully promoting Appaloosa to Appaloosa breeding complete with national shows and nationally recognized points.  Striving for the F8 (eight generations Appaloosa only) bred Appaloosa horse, which is said to be genetically pure blooded.  Currently registering a few rare F7's - their goal is not too far in the future.

**NOTES**

The Appaloosa Horse Club, which is the Natioanlly recognized registry for Appaloosa Horses, currently promotes a color breed, not a blood breed.  To say the Appaloosa horse of today is a mutt, is a very true statement.  The Foundation Appaloosa Breeders are a group of dedicated breeders to bring back the blood breeding using the old foundation bloodlines that founded the registry in 1938.  Our long term goal is to close the books to breeding to outside breeds.  Currently, the Appaloosa Horse Club allows a colored Appaloosa to be bred to a registered Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred or Arabian to produce a registered Appaloosa.  Because of the heavy influx of out crossing to these different breeds, the Appaloosa has evolved into several phenotypes.  The most commonly seen phenotype in modern times, is the modern bred Appaloosa which is mostly Quarter Horse breeding with the lovely Appaloosa color.  The Foundation Appaloosa Breeders have a goal to bring the phenotype back to the original long lean athlete of yesteryear, while preserving the old foundation bloodlines and producing horses that are conformationally correct, athletic, possess people oriented temperaments and willing dispositions.  New Promise Farms specializes in endurance type horses, and with this goal has selected the old foundation bloodlines for the stamina and diehard temperament of those horses.
